Rate of base flow recession is a constant, which produces a series of parallel lines as shown. The groundwater component of stream flow is represented by the area on the graph beneath these straight lines.

Spring flows can be examined in the same sort of way. As many ‘springs’ may really be land-drains or at least have a surface water component, it can be important to identify the groundwater element. This will help you to decide which aquifer unit a spring is draining, and will indicate whether or not it is likely to dry up. Both of these facts are fundamental to a full understanding of the workings of the groundwater system in your study area.
